Update after looking at additional pictures/reading other comments...I cannot believe this is a "medium roast". My beans look black and oily like a dark roast. Bag says medium roast. I drink medium roast. I ordered medium roast.
Tastes like nothing better than Starbuck's Dark Roast. I keep drinking it because I am not going to waste $40 for coffee, but I keep getting disappointed with how much I spent on the bag. I never mind paying for quality (it's why I bought it in the first place!)...but this misses the mark.
A quick primer for those who want to learn about Konas:
There’s only two estates I’m aware of that have the coveted “Extra Fancy” distinction given by the state’s agricultural Dept who gives the ratings by actually scrutinizing individual beans. Could be a very few more I’m not aware of that are newer but for a couple of decades, there were actually only two. It’s important to understand the grading system bc “extra fancy” & “fancy “ are not subjective adjectives, they are part of a very long tradition of grading done by the state of Hawaii.
Firstly, MANY ppl wrongly think they have tried Kona coffee. The reasoning being, that most people are drinking Kona BLENDS. In the US, as long as there is ONE KONA BEAN in the bag, it’s legal to call it a Kona blend. Others that market it as Kona coffee only are required to have 10% Kona beans mixed with other inferior cheapo beans (usually arabica from other countries who sell cheap beans. There are some fine blends out there, but you’re not tasting the uniqueness of a true Kona.
Secondly, to have the distinction of 100% Kona, it must be grown in the small Kona region of the big island, where the climate is different from the tourist areas ie beaches. Even still, there’s different elevations that change the taste of the beans. It’s the volcanic area & therefore different estates have different elevations.
It doesn’t stop there, many companies buy 100% Kona beans from different estates in bulk to get in on the $ that is rightfully demanded for these unique beans-but these are usually inferior beans and mixing from multiple estates inevitably changes the taste further.
Additionally, some bigger estates have switched to computers to sort & roast their beans. This results in some inferior beans getting through the cracks during sorting & over roasting during that process. With the limited supply and the increased demand over time, it pays to do your homework. Single estate 100% Kona beans that are completely processed from picking the cherries, to sorting, roasting, packaging and shipping all done by humans are going to have the most consistent taste and quality. It’s a generations old practice and usually small family owned estates who do everything themselves are the ones that get the highest ratings from the agricultural Dept from the state of Hawaii. “Award winning” is not the same thing as the actual grading system.
Grading system:
Type I coffees (means they came from berries that had 2 half beans per cherry/fruit)
Extra Fancy- highest grade. Largest, best quality beans & super expensive. (2021-expect to spend $75-200/lb)
Fancy- high grade
Kona #1- mid-grade, commonly used in restaurants
Prime/Estate grade- lowest grade, but still better than most coffees!
Type II beans/coffees (means they came from one whole bean per cherry/fruit and are the rarest of the rare)
Peaberry prime is the lowest grade of type I beans; Peaberry #1 is the highest quality/grade of the type II grades.
(Note: Peaberry is the MOST EXPENSIVE, & it is only a darker roast, therefore it also has a bit more bitterness & is not for everyone)
There are no other grades. Any other claim is bunk. It’s a standardized grading system that has been around forever. Buyer beware. Plenty of good blends out there. I’m a believer there’s a Kona for everyone & at different price points. However, it’s a booming business and many are trying to get in on it even though the real stuff is most likely a family owned estate that has been passed down for generations. None of it is cheap. If you’re going to splurge on a real Kona, make sure ur money is getting what you pay for.
The more you know 💫 Enjoy!
You won't find anything remotely similar in the big box stores, the little box stores, the local coffee shop, Starbucks, online, offline, or even from that hipster who opened his own coffee-roasting business somewhere in town. If there's real competition out there, I haven't found it, and I've been looking!
Update Jan 2019 - Still the best!
